Sound of 2011

Ok you know I love the sound of 2011. It's like the mercury prize. Very few people seem to have heard of it, it's a little bit pretentious, but it does actually make a difference. Well a little bit.

If you want the full line-up/winners/interviews it's all on the BBC site. Obviously I have an opinion/some issues, and obviously I'm going to tell you about it, because I'm just pretentious enough think it matters.

1) I think they got it wrong.
Ok, as far as I'm aware everyone they ask gets one vote and then all of these get summed up to give the results. Plus the rules are a bit confusing (in terms of how much 'success' they've had before hand). Which would mean there is no discussion, no re-polling based on the shortlist, and therefore a whole lot of 'ooh yeah I forgot about them' when the list comes out. So basically I think the real list should have gone; Jessie J/Wretch-32/Nero/The Vaccines/James Blake. Possibly in that order.

2) There are issues with similar artists being posted.
Now fair enough both Jamie Woon and James Blake might be big next year, but surely they are going to have the same audience. So really the list should include 1 rock band/1 minimalist-new generation dubstep/1 chill rock/1 solo artist/1 urban in order to cover all bases. Or something like that. Because now if people don't get post-dubstep then your going to be wrong TWICE BBC poll people. (Though in all honesty if you look at previous lists there have been some major upsets. Like lady Gaga not getting voted number 1. . .)

3) They didn't get my opinion.
Ok it's not like they would, but if they did then I want to see Yuck and Wretch 32 in there because I've loved them longtime. (We're talking Cajun Dance Party days for Yuck - and the original Wretch Breakthrough track.) Jessie J would stay, because I like hearing her interviews and I do genuinely think she's going to be massive (It's still a female world). James Blake for being original. And probably Anna Calvi just for the amount of twitter hype she generated. Or maybe Nero because I'm sure I'm right about that one.

So, to sum up, that's at least one band I really like, one that's massively over-hyped by industry-types (and go most years end up filed in the 'fail' column), one act with real potential to be huge, one that fits the trend of the time, and one who's a bit different.

Ok that's it. Just thought I should clear it up. And for those who are still interested, I base all of the above on the following opinions;

Anna Calvi - Drove twitter wild when Domino introduced her as their signing. Still actually haven't heard anything (mainly because I'm trying to avoid it for fear of the hype)

Clare Maguire - Amazing voice but her biggest hit so far is dubstep remix of her latest single, which probably says that she won't be massive, but will be loved by the people who do know her.

Daley - Unusual, works well on the Gorillaz track. Not sure the UK is ready for male solo artists again.

Esben & The Witch - Don't know enough to comment. Had heard of them but only a bit, genuinely didn't realise they had so many people behind them. Intriguing.

Jai Paul - Really nice music. Well that one song I've heard. The one that kind of sinks into the background if your not paying attention.

James Blake - Really original, although I'm not sure if the pop charts are ready. The music fans are, but I don't know about the downloading tweenagers who determine success.

Jamie Woon - Would be original, if James Blake hadn't just got there first (and yes I know Night Air is six years old - we just didn't hear it til 2010).

Jessie J - Popstress extrordinaire. Ready for world domination. Major stars singing her praises. Genuine person.

Mona - Have generated as much twitter hate as Anni Calvi got hype. Probably because they got lots of hype from pretentious music types who then pretended to hate them. Or they're actually shit.

The Naked and Famous - I get it. I just don't like it. I'm sorry.

Nero - Strong, dance music that fits perfectly in the current musical landscape. Will do well in 2011.

The Vaccines - Ok so we have guitar bands again, but actually the Vaccines are nothing special so can everyone stop pretending like they are? I don't want to hate them for the hype, but can we tone it down a bit? Even if they are going to be jumped on by starved indie fans.

Warpaint - Again genuinely nice music that I enjoy and occasionally don't realise I'm listening to. What's with all these chillout artists? Did they poll people on a beach somewhere abroad?

Wretch 32 - I hope he makes it this time. Has some great lyrics and some cheesy ones that make him a perfect pop/rap star.

Yuck - Oh Cajun Dance Party why were you not more successful? Was it the Kooks? Did they steal your thunder? Please world do not let the Vaccines be bigger than Yuck. Or at least let them do better this time round. (NB Yuck are not the same as Cajun Dance Party, they are formed from the ashes of, but in my head its all the same)
