Anyway short of the work, and getting lost and the man in me not asking for directions, and then getting half-sneaked in 'cos I didn't have a ticket - I had a great time. I feel at this point we should make one thing clear; a lot of the reviews/tweets I've read (3) seem to talk about the noticeable screaming. I'm pretty sure this wasn't just me. However I do remind you this was my first gig of the year (I KNOW!)
It started well*. Reaching Forward, album opener. Amazing. Then into I'll Be Yours. (I should explain at this point that most of my friends seem to assume I have no emotions, to the extent that when I get all wide-eyed about Slow Loris' with Cocktail Umbrellas they tell me off because it scares them.) Anyway I'm not a slushy song sort of person yet this song has somehow become so loved by me it's my ringtone. I was actually a little bit overwhelmed to hear it so early in the set. There was a moment in verse two when Cissi got all super-time on the drums and everyone looked over at her like they were annoyed they now had to play fast too. I kinda hope it was intentional. I like in-jokes (not that it was an in-joke involving me. I think I would actually have a restraining order if it'd got that far).
The set carried on mirroring the 2nd album track list pretty closely, minus 'Fuckarias' and including a few album one tunes. It was fun. It was dancy, it was well played, it was very very enjoyable. At some point I text my best friend the words 'TDD much hotter IRL' and then ranked them. I'm not proud of this, but that's how caught up in the moment I was. It also explains why I proposed on twitter the next day. (Not a stalker. Honest.)
Set closer was amazing. Ok it was a little bit pretentious. The whole 'I'm finished so I'm going to put my instrument down and walk off, then in four bars time someone else can do the same, until it's just the guitar loop feeding back of the speakers left'. I'm intrigued to see how this translates to festivals where you DON'T GET AN ENCORE. I mean have TDD even thought about this? Speaking of which, Fuckarias obviously made it's appearance during the encore. Having been really good until this point, I decided there was no longer any point in keeping my feet on the ground for the duration and started doing that weird, half jump moshy type dance you do when noone else seems to really be joining in and your bag (complete with academic articles and scary stary-eyes on the front) is a bit too big to let you move properly. It was good.
My best friend has promised to help with ranking at glasto. I apologise to the band now. But I can guarantee we'll be the two girls dancing our asses off somewhere near the front. Make sure you say hello.
(*Getting lost meant I missed the support act, which means you don't get to read my amazingly judgemental review of a band I will fall in love with in three months time just because I hear them on the radio too much. Shame. If you want to experience something along these lines, I direct you back to last year's Drums review)
