First watch this. Provided you haven't already.
I know exactly how many times I have watched this (3). I also know that I have spent most of the time since unable to get the hook out of my head. (Including a particularly horrible 6 hour shift at work.)
This is a good thing I hear you argue. It means it is catchy. This is what Sony are looking for. That's fine. I have no problem with that. Just like I have no real problems with the song. Except one. What is this hook that plagues me? (Ok 'plagued' is perhaps OTT)
Some of you will say 'Gucci Gucci Louis Louis Fendi Fendi Prada', some of you will say 'One big room, full of bad bitches'. THIS IS MY PROBLEM. THERE ARE TWO HOOKS.
What's my problem? That's a good thing, you say.
THEY SOUND LIKE THEY ARE FROM TWO DIFFERENT SONGS THAT HAVE BEEN CARELESSLY HASHED TOGETHER. IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.
One catchy hook is good, two is excellent, but the song still has to make sense. I get the really tenuous link between the two (Perhaps all the bad bitches are wearing Gucci!?) but then the verses are all bragging (which is what hiphop is and its awesome at it, this is not my complaint). It doesn't fit.
There's a producer somewhere deep inside me. Granted it is not a very good one, nor has it ever seen the light of day, but all it wants to do is separate these two hooks into two songs. The girl's good, if she's signed to Sony she must have enough rhymes to write two separate songs, so why has she released one that sounds like it was two demos smashed together? The two hooks even sound uncomfortable layered over the top of each other. Its clumsy.
All I want is two separate songs. I think both of them would be awesome. I would listen to them until my ears couldn't take it anymore. I just don't want them pushed together. It's not much to ask, is it?
UPDATE; As if to prove my point I just found this. (Skip to 2.07.)
Do not push songs together. However great you think your hooks are. Let them live separate lives. (Or at least don't expect me to not notice. Bitch. :P)
